Cold Vapour Atomic Absorption
The most widely used technique for mercury analysis remains Cold Vapour Atomic Absorption (CVAA). This is due to the techniques wide application and reliable, robust performance.
Mercury within an aqueous or digested sample solution is first oxidised to Hg2+ before analysis. During the analysis samples are mixed with a reductant (typically stannous chloride) to produce elemental mercury vapour (Hg0). This solution enters a gas / liquid separator from which the mercury vapour is transported via a carrier gas (argon) to an absorption cell for quantitative measurement by AA spectroscopy.
