Environmental Testing and Monitoring Instrumentation

Direct mercury analyser for easier testing

Following recent anxiety over mercury levels in the environment and within the food chain, leading instrumentation company Quantitech has organised a roadshow in which the company will demonstrate a new measurement technology that is faster, easier and cheaper. Quantitech's Dr Gareth Pearson says, "Mercury analysis technology has advanced considerably recently, which means that it is now easier for food companies to test their products and allay customer fears."
"The new fully automated mercury analyser, the ' Hydra-C' employs thermal decomposition and atomic absorption for the rapid direct analysis of liquid or solid samples without a need for acid digestion."
Research from the USA has recently discovered that mercury contamination in food may be more widespread than previously thought. Laboratory tests in New York earlier this year found that a regular weekly diet of six pieces of raw tuna would exceed the maximum set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Additionally a quarter of sushi outlets surveyed in another study had such high mercury levels that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could take legal action to remove the fish from the market.
Anyone interested in the free demonstration from Dr Pearson, who will be taking the Hydra-C around the UK, should contact him on gp@quantitech.co.uk .
